Ears Open Prompt…My Poem 1 Cheerleader

Cheerleader

Short-skirted girl,

tries hard to be a woman.

On the sidelines

she is certain of

the how’s and why’s,

highs and lows,

gain and loss.

She lives each play

as life or death.

On game day, she moves

from class to class,

her uniform a proof

of her worth.

Until her angry boyfriend

at her locker sneers ugly,

Where the hell, were you?

No longer sure,

why’s and how’s

no longer clear,

she shrinks inside.

Her armor cannot

hide her shame.

He stalks away.

Tentative,

she trails behind him.
