Today for the first time in three years, I swam in the ocean. Really swam. Not just walking in small waves cresting at my knees. But beyond the first breakers to where there are only swells to rock our bodies. The place where we can lean back and rest upon the water. To trust the water to bear our weight, like a small child rocked on a mother’s lap, When we stand on the shore, the sea is vast, an endless horizon. But when we give ourselves over to it, we find the intimate in that very small space in the infinite.
